Yesterday I spent the day selling my wares at the Crafty Fox Christmas Market. The market was a two day affair, with 3 floors of crafty goodness. Downstairs sellers included Heart Zeena (lover her!), and Jim Bob Art and upstairs a handful of top sellers including my good friend Lunamano, Charlie and the Fox (whom I brought a rather fantastic t-shirt from!) and Lil3birdy.

The second floor bar was also home to The Teas Knees, and I had a lovely cup of tea and huge slice of victoria sponge from them to keep me going.

If you live in London, and can get to Brixton easily, then I highly recommend coming to the next Crafty Fox event. I hope I will be there too.

The theme was celebration, which I tried to capture with party hands, and a sense of festivity. The bejewelled fingers add to the Stylist sensibility, and the number 100 bracelet was added as the the number had to be included somewhere within the illustration.

New Camera!

Yesterday, I brought myself the gorgeous Sony Nex 5, as my small compact just wasn't cutting it any more. The picture, recently had dramatically fallen. Now, I am not an expert, but I will say that it handles very well. It has weight to it, like a proper metal camera. The lens (which is interchangeable) is brilliant. The picture quality is amazing! It was so worth it, and buying it now gives me a week, to get used to it before I take it on holiday. Above are just a few quick shots of some flowers in the garden, and a little shot of my cat, Scruffy, with her tongue out. She has no front teeth, so this is a regular look for her :D

In other news, a pair of beautiful cushion covers, designed by Anke Weckmann arrived in the post today. I brought these from Envelop, and am so impressed with the quality! As a designer and seller on there, it's nice to become a customer for once. These are part of the Lavender club collection, which you can buy HERE.

Rain Dance

This amazing piece of work, was a little collaboration between myself, and flyHerofly (aka Liam Smith). It seems an age away when he asked me to do some drawings with the intention that he would add his own style to them. I didn't do everything on here, and much of the credit must go to him. I drew the tepees, deer, mountains, and sun, but the fun dancing Indians, totem, canoe, and trees, and the wonderful colour scheme is all down to Liam.

Craft Fox Night Market

Thursday the 1st September saw the Crafty Fox team back at the Dogstar in Brixton, for an evening of stalls, making, DJ's and drinking. It was a great night and my second time having a stall at the event. It's definitely the most social market I have been involved in. It took a day to recover from, though, as I had to carry all the things back on the tube to West London.

Digital Painting

Sometimes, when you are struggling for creative ideas, it takes a mindless session, messing around in Photoshop, to help oil the brain cells. I have spent today doing just that. Using just my wacom tablet, and lots of layers and textures, I came up with three little narrative and decorative images. Top to bottom: Autumn Leaves, Blizzard, and Navigator.

It's been an incredibly useful exercise, as I now have an idea for my 2012 calendar, which I had been struggling with. It would be great to know your thoughts.

*UPDATE*

I had no internet most of Bank Holiday Monday evening, so I did another digital painting. This one is called Formation Fishing.

I also got excited today with the launch of a new digital pen by Wacom, called the Inkling. It could really shake up the way illustrators and designers work. It's definitely on my shopping list!

Notebooks and Totes

Yesterday, I managed to upload the first set of A6 notebooks.

They are printed on to acid free white card stock, with stapled plain pain paper. The A6 ones are a really neat little size, perfect for your notes and scribbles. I will also be adding A5 versions of the same designs, so if you are wanting a bigger size, hold out for those.

Cushion Covers Are Almost Here!

Well, I can happily announce that my fabric has arrived from Spoonflower, ready and waiting to be made into pretty fantastic cushion covers! It is a linen-cotton canvas and the colours are really vivid. I hope to make up a couple over the next week, ready for Crafty Fox at the Dogstar, on the 1st. I will be taking pre-orders there too :D Otherwise please be patient, because there will be lots of new things on the shop very shortly.

S, I thought I would give you all an update on what i have been working on lately. I have a summer fair coming up at my local library (Hammersmith Library, London, 11-4) on the 21st August, and will also be at the Crafty Fox Night Market on the 1st September, 6-10. It was important to me that I had some new items on show, and have been busy beavering away ordering this and that, and making things. To give you a treat the images above are some things for you to look forward to. Clockwise from top left: New floral fabric for my first cushion cover, detail of new illustration to be available as a print and postcard, detail of design for my new screen printed tote bag, and lastly, a pile of my new notebooks all printed with my patterns on! Also, I am currently working on christmas cards, and my very first 2012 calender, which will be in the form of a poster.

Fabric Is Here

Yesterday, 5 metres of Crepe de Shine turned up in the post. It was enormous and so amazing to see all the designs printed on it. Crepe de shine is a pretty nice fabric! Most of the designs are for the Swatch Loft, so I can't show them to you, but I will say they look amazing and I have all fingers and toes crossed for them to sell. The ones above are actually my personal designs, which I printed because there was a lot of space left on my 5 metres. I think I will make scarves out of them. What do you think?

I am thinking so much lately about Christmas, and what I want to have ready for the (fingers crossed) rush. Last year I had an amazing experience at Christmas, and this time around, I want to offer a range of textile products including cushion covers, tea towels and bags all with my own patterns on. As well as this I plan on adding a range of wooden jewellery, and a calender for the new year. You will also find lots of new prints and cards. To start me off I wanted to try out making a notebook, with a cover of one of my new designs. Printed on acid free card, with plain sheets inside, it is A6, but I would like to do some A5 also. These are some of the proposed colour ways. It would be great to know what you all think of my plans for the rest of the year?!

Russian Palace

Earlier this week I set myself a challenge to draw a large scale drawing. I had recently drawn some Russian palaces (thinking about Christmas) in my sketchbook (HERE)and thought it would be great to do a big one. I found the biggest sheet of paper I could find (approx 25"x21") and stuck it up on the wall. This was on Monday, and with my little set of Poscas I set about drawing the lines. 3 days later and it was finished, having been filled in with pen, and blue acrylic ink. I also added in some little Russian folk. I think I am pleased with it, but think it needs a mount to hide the edges of the paper. If anyone wants to commission me to do one similar please get in touch. I hope to do some A3 ones that will go on the shop in the Autumn, leading up to the Christmas rush.

I Finished My Book!

Today, I completed what has been about 8 weeks worth of work for my Illustrating Children's Books course. Having already made a small book called 'A History of Cats since 1985', and a few character ideas for a bear called Spectacled Henry, I wanted to create a complete kid's book with a story.

The finished book, called, 'Hello! What's This?' is in fact a 16 page illustrated book about an Owl that discovers something unusual. Printed on to card, and folded to make a super long concertina, that folds into a cover, it's a simple story aimed at the picture book market. I look forward to presenting it to my tutor at my last lesson tomorrow and I hope I can get a complete picture showing all the pages soon.

Well I did this design in 2007 as part of a collection for my textile degree, which was all space themed, and as Atlantis launches itself into space as the last Nasa shuttle mission, I thought it was a good opportunity to dig it out and share. It's a bit discoloured now though.

New Print

Actually, It's Lion and Tiger and Bear and it's my new Limited Edition 8x16 Print. Inspiration has been a bit thin on the ground and I am thankful I am doing Children's book illustration as a course right now, as it has given me the courage to explore character illustration more. Henry The Balancing Bear Sneak Peek // Finished Cat Booklet

This is my finished A History Of Cats Since 1985 Booklet. It works like a mini book, and folds out to reveal a paw print poster on the reverse. I will be taking it along to my Children's Book illustration course tomorrow night.

A History Of Cats Since 1985 Book Mock-Up

I have spent today, drawing my pet cats with the aim of making them into a little booklet. This is for a short course in children's book illustration I am currently doing, and the pictures above are of the first mock-up. Unfortunately the card I used wasn't A3 so a lot of the print got cut off. Apart from that it is a good illustration of what the final piece is going to look like. I still have another brief to complete for the course before I go back on the 6th, as well as other paid projects to do. To say I am a little stressed, is putting it mildly, but I am enjoying everything I do at the moment :D

Ballad Of Lola-Bacon

Earlier this year I decided to submit my work for the new issue of Ballad Of Magazine. The theme was Pet My Ballad, and I decided to draw these totem like dogs. It's been a real struggle to keep it all secret, as we haven't been allowed to show the work until we knew either way if we successful or not. New Stockist // New Printer

I am pleased to announce that I have a new stockist.

The Dandylion Shop in New Albany, Indiana, will be selling prints, cards, badges , and posters. It looks like a really great shop, and if I wasn't all the way in the UK, I would definitely go for a visit. In other news, I brought an A3 printer. The model is a Canon ix650, and so far I have printed 2 prints and they came out great!. I am keeping my A4 printer for scanning and printing basic documents.

Also, before I forget, I am now freelancing for The Swatch Loft, a textile agency. I will be producing floral prints for fashion, and look forward to the work ahead.

Garden Bird Pattern

Tweet! Tweet! Here is a look at my latest addition to my pattern collection. 'Garden Birds' is based on various species of small brids, including Blue Tits and Coal Tits. It was design with the purpose of being a wallpaper, or indeed wrapping paper if I find a good printers to use.

This is a rough idea I have for a new pattern, based around pencil drawings of various species of Tits. I think it needs another element added to it, and I want to try it in colour too, which means re-drawing. I really want to get some of my patterns made into wrapping paper as well. I have seen some amazing designs by nineteenseventythree and want to do my own. If anyone has any tips on how to achieve this please let me know!

There is just one full day now until the Crafty Fox Pop Up Market, in Brixton, and all this week I have been printing, trimming, packaging and pricing items.I have little piles of greeting cards and artwork all over my room. On top of that, I have been drawing some originals which you can see in the bottom picture and which will be available to buy on the day. I might even be turning up with one or two more if my fingers will allow me to hold a pencil again :D

Print & Pattern Blog Feature

I had a nice surprise today when I was checking my website. I noticed that I had hundreds of views and they were all coming from Print & Pattern, a blog on the world of surface pattern and design in industry. It was also nice because just below me was also featured Bonbi Forest,whose work ethic and style I love, and admire.

Consequently, I have had a good day, with lots of views on the website and shop, and one or two sales that have occurred directly because of the feature.

Lastly, I am still preparing everything for the Crafty Fox Pop Up Market this Saturday 16th April, at the Dogstar, Brixton. I have artwork to print out and package, a stock list to make, and probably other things which will transpire over the next few days, but I am very excited. Come along if you are in the area!

Also, I have been given the task to design something, and I was thinking it might be nice to really document the whole process for you all to see. From sketches, to the final product, so keep a look out. I might even tell you what it is for.

My Etsy Faves

This is one of my favourite features on Etsy, and with the addition of Circles, I really love to see what other people are liking. It is these tools which I think are really opening up the Etsy community.It used to be quite hard to get your items seen, without continually re-newing items in an attempt to keep at the top of the list. Now, people who might never have even thought of a shop like yours, are coming in, taking a look and liking what they see. I also notice that I am getting a few sales via the Circles tool, so it has to be good. Anyway, these are some of my faves, many of which have been found via Circles. Collaborative Project with Mr Brightside

I just thought I would let you know of a collaborative project I am working at the moment with Mr Brightside aka Liam Smith. It is on the subject of Native American Indians, and because I love that subject, I took myself off to the library to find some source material. Since then I have been reading a book called 'Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee' by Dee Brown, and if any of you get the chance to read it I think it will truly affect you.

So with all this research soaked in, I have finally started putting together my ideas which I am going to show you here. These are just black line drawings, which will (when finalised) be sent off to Liam who is a master of colour choice and textures. It should be really interesting to see what he does with it.

P.S. I hope to be designing my very first wallpaper collection next month, for a company in Mexico City. I hope to have more details soon!

I have just taken part in the very fun project A Tale To Tell project. 'An illustrated, collaborative storytelling project' devised by illustrators Jamie Mills and Jane Richardson

The story, now in it's 12th chapter, starts with the beginning of the Jungle Book, but as each illustrator and artist takes it the story has taken on a life of it's own, becoming an intriguing narrative both visually and in it's text. I have always wanted to do an overlapping repeat with animals, after seeing a Hussein Chalayan animal repeat of wild animals, during in my studies at Uni. Pick Me Up

On Saturday 19 March I managed to get along to see Pick Me Up at Somerset House. This is the second year of the show, and each year I am convinced it is definitely something I will keep going back to. Here are some of the things I saw, and loved.

A newly discovered collective called Ink Illustration were taking part in some live drawing on Saturday at Pick Me Up. They seemed to be really lovely girls and I truly I loved the style of the drawings. Also, what a delightful choice of colours they used?!

Jessica Hische and her wonderfully designed alphabet made me want to crack on with my own alphabet. The variation and theme of each letter was really interesting. Some letters looked classic and others very new. I particulary liked the letter 'O' which had a little landscape drawing in the middle.

Love, love, love Paul Blows work! There where some wonderful large-scale landscape prints of forests that really caught my eye (sorry, no pictures). A real lesson in just going for it visually, I think.

I was very intrigued by the chaos of resident Graphic Artist, Anthony Burrill. It seemed like a bit of a free-for-all, where everyone was invited to create artwork from photocopied images using many motifs seen his work. There was also a live DJ!

Last but not least, my favourite work of the day!

I am just in love with the pattern and quality of the print, and am eager to get hold of some lino to have a go myself.

A Meadow // A3 Limited Edition Print

You may have seen in a previous post, a half circle design that I was working on. Well, that half circle became a full circle, and I hope to get it printed up as a Limited Edition A3 print.

Also, today I am working in my sketchbook, drawing birds again.

I have my mind set on Kingfishers, but also want to do some dramatic birds like crows, or magpies. However, I have no expectations at the moment. Letting the ideas form naturally seems the best option right now.

At the beginning of the week I read a tweet by @amyjpeg (aka Amy Blackwell) announcing the arrival of her first book in her shop. I love Amy's work, and have done for a long time, so was immediately intrigued and clicked over to have a look.

Basically, I couldn't resist it, and today 'A Pocketful of Black Cats' turned up at my house. It is truly wonderful, with the most beautiful little black and white drawings inside, and so professionally made. I also, got some lovely postcards too, which will be hung up when I find a new hanging system for my postcard collection. Anyway, thank you Amy, for the book. I will treasure it :D

Secret Valentines

Early in January the wonderful Alicia Rose from iamAliciaRose, organised a Secret Valentines event. Participants were given addresses to send off a selection of goodies in time for February 14th.

I received a corker of a selection from Harriet Gray, whom I follow avidly on Twitter, and whose work I greatly admire. I received a handmade notebook, a card with a beautiful bird drawing on it, a sticker, and some amazing handmade fabric hearts which now hang above my desk. They fit my colour scheme in room perfectly. There was also a selection of chocolate coins, but I ate those soon after opening :S

Burst Magazine Feature

Issue 2 of Burst Magazine came out online yesterday! Burst is a new platform to promote and support emerging creative's.

My feather heart design was used as the front cover, which is officially my first front cover of anything, so that was nice!

Love Easy Fair February 2011

This is my stall from last nights Love Easy Fair hosted by Craft Guerilla. It was a really nice night and I got lot's of great feedback from people as well as plenty of sales. According to the officials at the Gallery there were 243 visitors through the door, and they raised over £863 for the refurbishment of the William Morris Gallery. Good stuff!

The last pic is a headless me wearing my new Polar Bear Tee which was sent to me yesterday by the peeps at All Tropical. He got lot's of attention too :D

All in all a good night, and it was great to meet up with some fellow Tweeters too.

Tawny Owl // New Work

I recently got involved in a project put on by the people over at the Illustration Rally blog. The theme was Colours of the Rainbow, and I was given the colour yellow.

You can see my response in the owl at the top, but I have tweaked the colour to make it pop, as I plan on printing it as an A3 print, Limited Edition to 25, in my Brighton Pod shop. I will let you know when that happens.

A Little Unrelated

This is me getting my hair and make up done for a photo-shoot. My hairdresser (seen here) is entering a competition for Young Colourist of the Year, put on by Loreal. I was asked to be the model, and in preparation had my hair coloured ginger, and underwent 3 hours of hair styling to get it like an afro! I should hopefully get a copy of the final picture soon, so will post that when I can. The pictures were taken by Dani Riot, who was great!

I did this little picture for Helen Martin, the music editor for Amelia's Magazine. It is of a British band called the Smokefairies. They have some really cool bluesy rifs up their sleeves, so definitely worth a listen :D

Inspiration // Part 1

I want to start sharing more of my inspiration with you, so thought I would start with a collection of vintage travel posters, and a poster advertising New York and Spiderman, which is really cool. See more Superhero Travel Posters HERE.

Travel posters are nearly always brilliant! The compositions, colours and use of typography are so effective. I particularly like the Alaska poster, with the scale of the mountains and the cruise ship creating a great juxtaposition.

I hope that the images you see, will be reflected in my work, but to be honest they might not. It's just nice to collate some things together that inspire me, even if they don't completely inform my work.

Next 'Inspiration' Post will be on Jungles, and circus animals! It sounds weird, but there is a possible project being put together on the theme between me and my friend.

Postcard Auction

2 weeks ago I received my regular Alumni newsletter from the University of The Arts London, and read about a postcard auction that Chelsea was putting on. They were inviting people to create a postcard in whatever technique suited them, and they are all to be auctioned off at the end of February to raise money for Fine Art.

I thought I would give it a go this year, and the above monogram design is what I will be submitting. I have wanted to do an alphabet for so long now, and find myself getting very side tracked from all the plans I had. This was a great opportunity to go back and give it a go. I am very eager now to do an entire alphabet and have them ready to be put up in my shop. The auction itself is on 28th and results in a black tie event, which I have been invited to. Other artists involved are Anish Kapoor, and Jeremy Deller. It's all very exciting!

Lola the Hamster

This is Lola. She is a famous little hamster that belongs to my friend Jade. Lola once appeared in QI on an animal special as one of those pictures that come up in the background!

Jade had asked me to draw little Lola, and this is what I came up with. It's a kind of homage to her celebrity status.

My brothers fiancée is about to start up a baking company. She makes awesome cupcakes, and we have been lucky enough to indulge in her creations for a while. This week though she took a big step and brought a domain name,cherryredbakery and I was asked to create a cherry design for the holding page.

This was what I came up with. I think it resembles a kitsch sort of feel which works with Kelly's baking style.

I can't wait for it all to be up and running!

Last week I was contacted via Twitter, by Robin, who is behind Brighton Pod. He said he like my work, and would I be interested in joining Brighton Pod. I immediately checked out the site, and was impressed! It is such a good looking website that really focuses on the products, and I was eager to be a part of it.

This is what Brighton Pod is about according to the site:

New Original Artwork
